Umbrella tree - Schefflera actinophylla - $30 (Dayton)

Umbrella tree - Schefflera actinophylla 1 thumbnailUmbrella tree - Schefflera actinophylla 2 thumbnail
Umbrella tree - Schefflera actinophylla $30 - features long, shiny, oval green leaves that droop gracefully from a central stalk, resembling an umbrella. While not hardy here, makes a great houseplant and can be taken outdoors for the warmer months.

Schefflera prefers bright, indirect light, such as under a patio cover - direct intense sunlight can burn the leaves. A leggy or floppy plant needs more light. Prefers a rich, loose, well-drained potting soil, feed twice a week during growing season with liquid fertilizer. Schefflera requires fairly high humidity, so spray/mist leaves with water frequently. Water regularly during growing season waiting until the soil in pot dries out, then give it a deep, thorough soaking. Cut back on water during the winter months. Yellow and dropped leaves are signs of overwatering.

BEWARE - All parts of the Schefflera plant are mildly toxic to humans and more seriously toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
